Shutdown Threatens Crane Projects, Workforce
AGC urges Congress to end the shutdown, citing risks to crane-assisted infrastructure projects and construction schedules.
The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) is urging Congress to pass a clean continuing resolution to reopen the federal government, warning that the shutdown could delay federally funded infrastructure projects that rely on cranes and lifting equipment.
According to AGC, furloughed federal employees may be unable to process change orders, approve project milestones or award new contracts. Those delays could affect crane mobilization, project timelines and workforce planning across the heavy-lift, utility and transportation sectors.
“The federal government shutdown that started earlier this week has the potential to undermine the construction sector across the country. That is because the federal officials who need to sign off on change orders, conduct project inspections and award new projects are likely to be on furlough,” said Jeffrey D. Shoaf, chief executive officer of AGC, in early October at the beginning of the shutdown. “In other words, the longer the government is shut, the more likely construction employment around the country could be impacted negatively. That is why we are urging Congress to quickly pass, as it has many times in the past, a clean continuing resolution that will allow the federal government to reopen and vital infrastructure and public works projects to continue. Construction workers around the country are counting on Congress to do its job and fund the government.”
Public works investments have fueled demand for crane operators, lift directors and rigging professionals nationwide. Industry leaders warn that work slowdowns could also affect hiring pipelines and training programs if project schedules extend or pause — particularly in regions where crane-assisted projects rely heavily on federal approvals. Some employers are continuing to recruit to preserve momentum, while crane professionals look for ways to stay informed about new opportunities.
