New Simulator Program can Replicate Boom-Truck Instability

March 21, 2022 — CM Labs Simulations’ new training pack for boom-truck operators can simulate instability in order to better-prepare operators for real-life operation.

CM Labs, the developer of Vortex training simulators, says the new boom-truck training program is the only simulation-based product that accurately replicates machine instability and the ability to deploy outriggers.

The boom truck typically presents an increased likelihood of training incidents, as it is often the first equipment that inexperienced operators are exposed to. CM Labs’ training pack presents a safer alternative for initial training. It also reduces the increased fuel cost and machine wear and tear that typically result from novice handling.

The boom truck simulator can simulate deployment of outriggers to level the equipment before operation. It also can simulate the swing effect of the load, making it an ideal training tool for utility companies as well as for line-worker training schools.

Trainees acquire skills including control familiarization, outrigger deployment, load handling, and pole setting. Dedicated exercises also prepare trainees for CCO & EICA certification exams.

Performance metrics are tracked during training exercises so that trainers can assess safety violations, load control, and operational efficiency, among other indicators.

The Boom Truck Training Pack runs on the motion-enabled Vortex Edge Max and the fully immersive Vortex Advantage, paired with control levers. It also runs on the desktop Vortex Edge Plus, with heavy-duty joystick controls.
