Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. has secured its first contract to supply ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes to the West Coast of the United States, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion. TraPac Oakland, a container terminal operator in California, has awarded Liebherr the contract for two STS cranes, reinforcing Liebherr’s growing presence in the U.S. market.
While Liebherr has previously supplied STS cranes to East Coast terminals, this marks the first shipment to the West Coast. The new cranes feature includes a 66-meter (216-foot) outreach, a 53-meter (173.83-foot) lift height and a span of 30.48 meters (100 feet). With a lifting capacity of 66 long tonnes (metric tons) in twin-lift mode, these cranes are optimized for high-capacity handling and can efficiently service the world’s largest container vessels.
The STS cranes are equipped with advanced technology, including semi-automation systems and the latest anti-collision features, ensuring operational safety, precision and visibility.
“TraPac Oakland’s decision to invest in Liebherr’s advanced STS cranes marks a major milestone for our presence on the U.S. West Coast,” Shane Kuhlmey, divisional director at Liebherr USA, Co. for Liebherr Maritime Cranes said.
The investment in Liebherr cranes is part of TraPac’s broader modernization and expansion program for its Oakland terminal. After a recent $67 million expansion that nearly doubled the terminal’s size, the new cranes will enhance their ability to handle larger vessels and increased cargo volumes, improving operational flexibility and berth productivity.
“This partnership marks the next exciting milestone for TraPac Oakland as we continue our journey of upgrading our service levels and exceeding customer expectations” TraPac CEO Cameron Thorpe said.
